Turbochargers

Turbochargers

This month, we will be discussing the fundamentals of how a turbocharger operates! It is much more complex than exhaust gas enters the turbo, some magic occurs and you go faster.  The turbocharger assembly is cast inline with the exhaust manifolds, and is connected by tubing to feed the compressed air into the engine's cylinders. In a way, a turbocharger is similar to a piston engine itself; from start to finish, the process is, exhaust gases enter the turbocharger from the manifolds. That flowing exhaust gas spins a turbine inside the turbocharger. That turbine is cast onto a shaft that has another compressor turbine on that same shaft, separated by the turbocharger housing half. The compressor turbine, in turn, sucks in more air than an engine naturally could, so much so, that it creates a positive pressure of air, or "boost". Boost is measured in psi. The extra air that is pushed into the cylinders, allows more fuel to be injected in an efficient manner and also ... read more

Cost of Vehicle Ownership

Cost of Vehicle Ownership

Car ownership can be expensive. Not only is the initial purchase price of a vehicle getting progressively higher, there is also the cost of ownership that comes with it. While many think the two biggest factors in cost of car ownership are maintenance and repair, the reality is that the cheapest car you will ever have is the one you own. When you trade a vehicle in, you lose value on the trade & depreciation of your vehicle. Your new vehicle will depreciate quickly as well. You've also incurred more debt, and have taken on more interest on that debt. Let's not forget, this new vehicle will still need maintenance & tires all the same even if under warranty, and repairs when it is not. Considering you are paying no matter what, if you don't LIKE your vehicle, get rid of it and find one you like! But if you like your car or it suits your needs, you are much better off financially to hold onto it and maintain and repair it as necessary. Most people expect th ... read more

The Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S

This month we’re going to be discussing one of the most efficient and innovative cars around; Tesla, focusing on the Model S, their flagship vehicle. This car is 100% electric, making it very efficient, and eco-friendly. The basic features are truly impressive: the vehicle has a range of up to 335 miles on a single charge, can go 0-60 in 2.4 seconds, and has 5 star overall safety ratings. To put this into perspective, the closest contender for vehicle range on a single charge is the Nissan Leaf which does less than half of the Tesla at approximately 150 miles. To put the acceleration of the top of the line model into perspective, 0-60 in 2.4 seconds is faster than any production Ferrari or Lamborghini. The Tesla can be charged virtually anywhere; every car comes with access to the global charging network showing charging stations on the vehicle’s navigation wherever you are en route to. With just a 30 minute charge the Model S will be good to go for 170 miles! The Tesla Mod ... read more

BMW i8

BMW i8

This month, we will be discussing some of the technology in one of BMW’s most exciting vehicles: the BMW i8. The i8 has a unique drivetrain, that is, the system consisting of the engine, transmission, drive axles and components that connect them. The i8 has an innovative drive concept because it combines two high-performance drives in one car. The rear axle of the vehicle is driven by a 3-cylinder 228 horsepower gas engine connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission. While the front axle is driven by a 129-horsepower electrical machine combined with a 2-speed electronically controlled manual transmission. Due to the intelligent interaction of the drives, the BMW i8 has the performance of a sports car with the efficiency of a compact car. This provides the practicality of everyday use without giving up the style or feel of a sports car. The i8 has completely variable four wheel drive: the drive torque can be distributed 100% between the front axle and rear axle. The di ... read more

BMW Night Vision

BMW Night Vision

Night vision is an advancement in technology that has been offered since the mid 2000's on select BMWs but has made significant advancements for the G12 7 Series platform starting in 2016. BMW's night vision allows detection of pedestrians and animals in complete darkness in the central information display in the center of the dashboard. If equipped, night vision automatically comes on once the car sets off in the dark. The system has a working range of about 8 meters up to 100 meters for people, 70 meters for medium animals, and 150 meters for large animals. Warning in the central display include an interactive image of the hazard along with colors. Colors vary depending on the proximity of the hazard: yellow is an early warning for a hazard at distance , orange for the next level, and red is an immediate warning is shown in both the CID and the instrument cluster. The Heads-Up Display also will show a red flashing person or an animal symbol. If you are concerned about prop ... read more

BMW Lighting Engineering

BMW Lighting Engineering

BMWs have many subtle features that are part of the design of the vehicle lighting systems that many owners are unaware of. The approach to subtly integrate purpose into the very nature of the vehicle’s design and engineering, without feeling the need to make every feat a selling point, is truly what makes a BMW the ultimate driving machine. Did you know, historically all BMWs have red/orange backlighting in the interior because it is the easiest color for your eyes to see at night? BMWs also have a headlight aiming level sensor on the front control arm so the headlight automatically adjusts up and down over bumps to avoid blinding oncoming traffic. BMWs used daytime running lights years before they were mandated as standard equipment, and have used rain/light sensors to automatically turn the headlights and wipers ON or OFF since as early as 1996! Other manufactuers are currently advertising this feature on new cars on some commercials as if it is new technology! While halogen ... read more

BMW Valet Mode

BMW Valet Mode

This month we will be discussing BMW’s valet mode / key feature. This is a feature on all BMWs that has stayed consistent but evolved over time. What is Valet mode? Valet mode allows you to keep the glove box, trunk, and center console (if console is lock equipped) completely locked out from anyone, ideally while allowing someone else to drive your vehicle. While not all of us are visiting upscale hotels and restaurants where we valet our vehicle constantly, many of us have valuables or may want to keep valuables in our vehicle if we were confident we could secure them in the vehicle. We may also allow someone else frequent use of our vehicle but do not want them to access our personal items. Originally conceptualized for a “valet” situation, where you allow someone to valet your car without allowing them access to your valuable compartments, you can use this feature with other family and friends that just exude confidence in your ability to trust them! How is this ac ... read more

TwinPower Turbo

TwinPower Turbo

You may have heard that BMWs are "twin turbo". However, if you look carefully on the badge of the vehicle in recent years, they are marketed as "Twin power turbo" very intentionally: there is a difference between the "Twin Power" marketing campaign and a "twin turbo" engine.  Simply put, a single turbocharger would mean there is 1 turbocharger on the vehicle and twin, dual, or two turbo means there are two turbochargers on the vehicle. "Twin Power" refers specifically to a design aspect of either a single or dual turbo. That is, each turbocharger is a "Twin scroll" design. Mechanically speaking, this is the same concept as a variable length intake manifold - there is a long passage and a short passage allowing for best airflow from best of both worlds at low engine speed and high engine speed. Similarly, the turbocharger has a short "scroll" or passage and a longer passage. This allows no delay in boost pressure ... read more

Monsoon season is officially from mid June to the end of September, and each season ranges on the frequency, locations, and intensity of the storms. Therefore, it’s important to be informed so you can not only keep yourself safe, but prevent damage to your vehicle! Monsoon storms often bring sudden and lengthy periods of heavy rain, wind, lightning, and blowing dust – a variety of hazards for drivers who spend most of the year cruising under sunny skies. Here are some things you could face during monsoon season: Increased Stopping Distance Braking relies on friction generated between your tires and the roadway to stop your vehicle’s momentum. Wet roads increase the distance required to bring the vehicle to a stop, and worn tires will take ev ... read more
